Front Porch Friday #16

I want to thank those that linked up last week. I hope when this post goes live that I will be in the deer stand. I am running out of time to take more game and I really want to put 2 more deer in the freezer. If I do this, I will have almost our entire years worth of meat taken care of with only a few exceptions. So, wish me luck.

Oh, this post on Building a Bigger, Better Chicken Coop by Summer Acres is so timely. We only have 6 girls, but with the snow we have had since before Christmas they must be going nuts. They won't leave it because of the snow either.

Front Porch Friday #14

Last week the hop went live on Christmas day, as a result we only had one post shared. I really didn't thing about that. I wasn't online either and if I don't do my daily online chores, I very rarely get back to the things that have passed. I also promised that I would include two features this week. 

Feature from week before last. Pallet Fence by Morning Chores. I have looked into doing this and am still considering it, I have found the pallets I want to use, but can only get maybe two a month (I am pretty picky, my wife wants it cute) and they aren't free.

This week has been a bit of a challenge. My wife has been fighting a cold. I always hate when any member of my family is sick, but sometimes it just happens. Enjoy the hop.

Front Porch Friday #10

It has turned much colder and I am thankful for my cold weather gear. I am hoping to get back into the woods soon and make sure that there is meat in our freezer. It is my goal to harvest enough meat this season to not have to buy any ground beef for the next year. Will I accomplish that goal? I have no idea, but it will not be for a lack of trying.

I have been spending a lot of time lately thinking about what my goals will be for next year and reflecting on what we accomplished this year. All in all we have had a good year. There will be a lot of changes for next year, be sure to keep checking back. 

Gregg's pick this week is 10 Ways to Deal With a Cold Naturally by Feathers in the Woods. I hope I don't have to deal with a cold this year, but if I do I want all the information I can find.

I hope you had a wonderful thanksgiving and were able to spend some time with your family. I also hope that time was peaceful. Now that Thanksgiving has passed, many people have turned their full attention to Christmas. Please don't get so wrapped up in the what am I going to get who or the what is so and so going to get me. Take time to enjoy the ideal of peace on earth and good will to men.

Gregg's pick this week is Making Bone Broth by Strangers and Pilgrims. Using every part of everything you have is just a good idea.

Mama K chose 1 Chicken, 6 Ways to Use it by Taylor Made Ranch. Lots of recipes on how to use that chicken up. I am guessing this would be good for leftover turkey as well.

Front Porch Friday #8

Welcome to Front Porch Friday!

 

We just experienced some interesting storms. Just south of us there was some straight wind damage. The power is still out in some of these areas. Each time something like this happens it brings back to my mind the importance of having a blackout kit.

Now that the storms have passed we will be seeing our coldest temperatures of the season so far. We have had patchy frost, but after this weekend we will not only see a true killing frost, but also our first hard freeze. This will be perfect for some time in the deer stand. I hope this find you well. I always enjoy hearing from all of you.

Gregg's pick this week is How to Make Vitamin C Rich Rose Hip Syrup by Strangers and Pilgrims. Anything that can reenforce health and our immune system is great.

Front Porch Friday #7

Welcome to Front Porch Friday!

 

This weekend we will be going to the Veteran's Day Parade. It was supposed to be last weekend, but was postponed due to rain. This will be my first parade where we now live. I have been told that this parade will be small. This is sad. As much as I cannot stand some of the things that our government does, I have nothing but respect for the men and women who have served this country. Both of my grandfathers served during World War II and I have a great grandfather that served in World War I. I myself served during peace time. The men and women who take the oath to uphold the Constitution and defend it against all enemies both foreign and domestic do so out of a sense of duty, not for any reason that could be considered nefarious.

The Rural Roundtable is shaping up nicely. We now have experts in several areas of preparedness and homesteading that will take your questions. These questions will be answered on the podcast. Look for more information about each of the members of the Roundtable to come out soon. One of the members is my co-host for this blog hop. Katey Kautz will be taking questions in regards to essential oils. So send me your questions.

This week I get an extra day off and that is always appreciated. I have started prepping the garden spot for next spring and have been working really hard on not only the blog but also the podcast. It is doing great. I have also signed up for the Beyond Off Grid Online Summit. I am really excited. It is a 6 day online event that is free to watch while the event is live. The only way I will need to pay is if I want to access the information after the event is over. If this sounds interesting to you, you can check it out.

This weekend I will be scouting out my deer hunting locations. I am hoping to put at least two in the freezer. My wife is really excited about the possibilities of having homemade jerky (guys I know, she is awesome like that). One of my goals is to produce or harvest 100% of our families meat within the next two years. This would greatly increase our sufficiency.

Front Porch Friday #4

Welcome to Front Porch Friday!

 

We have had our first frost of the season. That is always welcome for me. I really don't like to hunt anything with fur before we have a frost. Squirrels and rabbits commonly have what we call wolf worms in them before the first good frost. Wolf worms are a parasite that are common in many animals. They really don't damage much meat and it is safe to eat an animal that has had wolf worms after you cut out the affected area, but when you are having a difficult time getting your family to eat wild game anyway, you really don't want something that will turn them against it completely.
